Former West Midlands Police Constable Allan Richards appeared before Birmingham Crown Court on 21 October 2016 and was found guilty by a jury of nine counts of indecent assault against boys between 1982 and 2003.  Richards had been convicted in June 2016 of thirty one offences against boys including rape, misconduct in public office, gross indecency, sexual activity with a child and voyeurism committed between 1976 and 2014.  The case was listed for sentencing on 4 November 2016.

A statement from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) stated:

“the scale of Richards’ offending is truly shocking.  The fact that he was able to abuse his position of authority and trust as a Police Officer while committing many of his crimes is of great concern”

There now follows an independent investigation by the IPCC into the handling of the allegations made against Allan Richards while he was a serving Police Officer.  The investigation had previously been suspended until the conclusion of the criminal proceedings against Richards.
