Amina al-Jeffery was a normal student in Swansea until her father accused her of dishonouring the family with her “toxic behaviour”, by which he meant having a boyfriend. He took her to Saudi Arabia where he admits to keeping her in a cage. It is alleged that she has been beaten, starved and deprived of water.
Yesterday in the Royal Courts of Justice, Mr Justice Holman ordered the return of Amina Al-Jeffery from Saudi Arabia by the 11th September 2016 and ordered her father to pay her airfare.
While acknowledging the difficulty in enforcing the order in Saudi Arabia, Holman J stated that Amina is a British Citizen and “If citizen means anything, it means the right to protection. To do nothing at all would be a dereliction of my duty to Amina.”
It is important that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office now do everything they can to help secure Amina’s return. Read our open letter to Boris Johnson here: Letter to the FCO which has also been published by the Guardian.
Amina’s Solicitor is Anne-Marie Hutchinson OBE QC (hon) of Dawson and Cornwell Solicitors, London. Anne-Marie has been a huge inspiration to all of our International Family law team and she does great work.
