An investigation has been launched after a video has emerged on social media which appears to show a South Yorkshire police officer hitting a teenager on the head with a baton.
This incident occurred after Saturday’s South Yorkshire derby in the Championship between Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday.
The teenager was escorted to hospital after the incident with what looked to be a significant head injury.
South Yorkshire Police Chief Superintendent and match commander Sarah Poolman has confirmed:
“A full investigation, including extended video footage, will take place to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions that led to a 16-year-old boy sustaining a head injury from an officer’s baton and an officer being assaulted, sustaining injuries to his stomach and head”.
Having viewed the footage of the incident ourselves one would expect this to be an incident referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to conduct their own independent investigation into the incident.
