Sentencing different ethnicities

The Sentencing Guidelines Council has today published research investigating disparities between sentencing among different ethnicities, and revealed that Asian Defendants convicted of drugs offences are 50% more likely to be given an immediate custodial sentence, and a longer one, than White Defendants.

The report considers data from Courts in England and Wales and places Defendants in one of four categories – Asian, White, Black and Other. Equally as alarmingly, Black Defendants are 40% more likely to receive a custodial sentence than White Defendants although there is no trend for these sentences being longer overall.

The report was prepared as part of an ongoing review of sentencing guidelines for drugs offences.
