Police Officer dismissed after making dishonest statement

At a misconduct hearing on 17 July 2020 P.C. Thomas was dismissed without notice for gross misconduct.

A disciplinary panel found P.C. Sally Thomas had breached the honesty and integrity, and duties and responsibilities standards of professional behaviour.

The misconduct hearing followed an independent investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The case arose after a woman complained about her arrest and detention.  Force was used against the woman during the arrest and she suffered a head injury.  P.C. Thomas failed to tell the Custody Sergeant about this.  When interviewed about the incident by IOPC investigators P.C. Thomas made dishonest statements about what she had and had not witnessed while the detained woman was being taken to the Police van following her arrest.  Body worn video footage together with other evidence discredited P.C. Thomas’ account.

After the misconduct hearing dismissed the South Wales Police Officer without notice the Director for Wales Catrin Evans stated:

“in this case, P.C. Thomas did not display the high standards of professional behaviour expected of Police Officers by making a false account during her interview with our investigators”.
