31st October 2018

I had only just finished writing an article for our website about the disturbing case of photos of Sunderland women being circulated on the internet, when the case of Jefferson Young came to my attention.

Jefferson Young, 21, of Jesmond Road, Newcastle was reported to have pleaded guilty to an offence of stalking between May and August 2018 as well as disclosing private sexual photographs/film with intent to cause distress.

Young, a third year Chemistry student, had an on/off relationship with his now ex-girlfriend. The relationship ended and he bombarded her with messages, emails and voicemails. In January 2018 he sent a private video of his ex-girlfriend to her new boyfriend with a view to humiliating her. This act of revenge porn caused his victim significant distress and affected her studies.

Young appeared before South East Northumberland Magistrates Court in October 2018 and was given a 12 month Community Order with rehabilitation and unpaid work, as well as being ordered to pay costs of £85.00 and a victim surcharge of £85.00. A Restraining Order banned him from contacting his ex-girlfriend or going to the immediate area where she lives.

Young may now find himself facing a claim for compensation from his victim for the distress caused.
