Gateshead Foodbank

As part of our commitment to helping those who are most vulnerable in our community, our offices raised a generous amount of donations for one of our local foodbanks, Gateshead Foodbank.

The Importance of Foodbanks

In 2020, 14 million people lived below the poverty line in the UK. This figure is expected to be higher given the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, a time in which many individuals have felt insecurity and instability. It is estimated that the COVID crisis in the UK has driven almost 700,000 people into poverty and it is for this reason that we need to support local foodbanks which provide for those who are deemed most vulnerable in our community.

Everyday people in the UK go hungry from reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on low income. A simple box of food, toiletries and other essentials makes a massive different, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health issues.

Gateshead Foodbank are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. Gateshead Foodbank joined the trust in 2012 becoming the 200th foodbank in their network. They currently operate three distribution centres across Gateshead and run four sessions per week for clients to attend.

600 + people across Gateshead are helped and supported each week during the current pandemic by Gateshead Foodbank. With the support of over 100 amazing volunteers which support and help the foodbank regularly, in ensuring that 5 tonnes of food per week is distributed to local people in crisis.

As a network, they want to see more people helped of crisis and fewer people needing foodbanks in the future. That is why the Trussell Trust and local foodbanks are working together to develop new ways to help people out of crisis.

Charities such as Gateshead Foodbank rely on the support of others to ensure nobody in our local community must go hungry. The gift of financial support, time, business partnership and food can make a real difference.

Big or small, every gift received by the foodbank helps transform the lives of those struggling.

All of us at Ben Hoare Bell LLP thank all those working in our local foodbanks throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic for their commitment and generosity in helping those in need and ensuring even with a pandemic, that nobody goes hungry.
