Overview

Ben Hoare Bell is a well established Practice operating from 4 sites in Sunderland, Newcastle and Gateshead. The Practice has 9 Partners.

The Practice has a strong ethical base and wishes to remain committed to operating within the publicly funded area of legal work, offering a high quality service to people regardless of means.

The Practice has grown considerably in recent years. The work in the Family department is often fast paced and can involve dealing with people in desperate circumstances and with disturbing life histories.

Although this post will be based at one office the post holder is expected to work from any office used by Ben Hoare Bell LLP.

Key Areas

  • Work with clients

To attend clients and witnesses; to take instructions from them;  to draft statements;  to advise on points of procedure and basic points of law and to take charge of files.

  • Work within the department

To manage a client’s file where appropriate and to seek advice and supervision in more complex matters.

  • Court work, Case Conferences

To represent the Client (to the limits of right of audience).

  • Administrative

To undertake administrative tasks relating to the work with clients.

  • Home visits

To attend clients at home subject to departmental policy.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Skills

  • Good communication, written and oral.
  • Good advocacy and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal skills with a wide range of people.
  • Evidence of ability to handle a range of tasks and to prioritise.
  • Proven computer skills (essential), particular experience in use of Microsoft packages and the ability to be self-servicing for word processing.
  • Numerate.
  • Evidence of research skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member with different levels of staff.
  • Proven problem solving ability.

Qualifications

  •  LPC or ILEX
  •  Current full driving Licence (desirable)
  •  Good Academic Qualifications

Experience

  • Proven interest in social aspects of law and development of human rights law.
  • Experience of administrative work (desirable).
  • Experience of working with people from a range of backgrounds.
  • Experience which indicates commercial awareness.
