On 27 November 2015 Hon Lowell Goddard announced details of the twelve initial investigations of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse set up by the Government.
As one of the twelve initial investigations the inquiry will be looking into Medomsley Detention Centre, Consett, County Durham. This is separate to Durham Constabulary’s current criminal investigation in which a number of former Detention Centre Officers have been formally interviewed under Police caution. It is expected decisions will be made by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in 2016 as to which Officers (if any) are prosecuted for alleged non-recent sexual and physical abuse of detainees.
The Goddard Inquiry will conduct its own investigation into Medomsley. It has a budget of £17.9 million covering all twelve investigations in the first year. Many expect even this sizable sum will be quickly depleted given the scale of the inquiry.
