Legal Advice Byker Shortlisted for Award

‘Legal Advice Byker’ is a pro bono legal advice scheme which we run with Northumbria University. The project has recently completed its fourth year and ran for a total of 10 weeks.

The Student Law Office at Northumbria University arranges for its LPC students to attend our Byker office each week. Students then meet a member of the public who otherwise could not access or afford legal advice. Supervised by a Ben Hoare Bell solicitor, students then take instructions and advise the member of public for free.

We are thrilled that the project has been recognised and is now shortlisted for a prestigious legal empowerment award – the Namati Justice Prize.

Since the project began in 2012 it has offered support to almost 100 vulnerable members of the community in Byker and the surrounding areas.

Cris McCurley, the lead Partner for Legal Advice Byker and head of the international family department says:

“It has been a great experience for Ben Hoare Bell to join with the students from the Student Law Office in this joint venture. It’s been a pleasure to work with such enthusiastic students and the clients have really benefitted, as have the Ben Hoare Bell mentors.”

We are also delighted to hear that the Student Law Office has been shortlisted in the Northern Law Awards for the ‘Pro Bono/Community Initiative’ category. Good luck to the Student Law Office and Northumbria University.
