IPCC to investigate Northumbria Police Officers

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to investigate an incident which occurred in South Shields on 29th July 2016 when a male was arrested by Northumbria Police officers.

The arrest was captured on video and was posted on social media. People who have viewed the footage on social media websites have subsequently raised concerns that the footage, albeit of poor quality, appears to show the arresting officers using excessive force against the male during the arrest.

As a result of the concerns raised Northumbria Police has voluntarily referred the incident to the IPCC who will likely now carry out an independent investigation into the incident.  Southern Area Commander Chief Superintendent Ged Noble said “The decision to voluntarily refer the matter should not be interpreted as a finding of wrongdoing – that is for the IPCC to establish”.

Northumbria Police has appealed for any witnesses to the incident to contact Northumbria Police via telephone by calling 101.
